Introduction
The locals call it “the magical” island. It feels like a different world from Rio de Janeiro. The island is safe, you have parties, you can go hiking, and even surfing. Also, don’t forget about the acai bowls! It’s an island with a diverse vibe. What can you do in Florianópolis?
Surfing
If you love surfing, I would recommend staying at the fishing villages of Barra de Lagoa or Campeche. There is a vibrant surf vibe, and you can meet many tourists and locals in the water catching waves together. Don’t forget to use sunscreen to avoid getting burned in the water. Enjoy the waves!
Digital nomad community
Many cafes, homestays, hostels, and hotels offer reliable Wi-Fi. That means you can work remotely from Florianópolis. Nowadays, there are many activities organized for digital nomads. There are even coworking spaces to work in a digital nomad environment and events to connect with other like-minded people.
Hiking
Florianópolis is a unique island because you can taste the famous Açaí here, relax on the beach with a caipirinha, catch a wave go hiking in the highlands. The island is so diverse and there are so many activities. Whether you are an active, tranquil, or even a business person, you can find your tribe and a vibrant environment here.
Spiritual experience
Are you looking for answers? The “magical” island is not called that for nothing. Locals and tourists from around the globe arrive here to try the Ayahuasca ceremony. It’s a ritual to connect with your deeper self. Some people go into the stage of hallucination to cure traumas or to find answers.
Cuisine
The island is popular for fish, oysters, acai, poke bowls, and of course the Brazilian caipirinha on the beach. You will find in Lagoa da Conceição the mecca for food lovers. There are many restaurants, bars, and cafes to find your favorite yummy spot.
Kiteboarding
You not only have surfing in Florianopolis, but there is also a kiteboarding community in Lagoa de Conceição. So, it’s possible to get lessons and try this water sport on the lake. Don’t forget to hire a reliable instructor and take at least 4-8 lessons to master this sport.
Skate community
I was pleasantly surprised to see many skateparks and skate cafes in Florianopolis. Islands usually don’t have a lot of space to create an urban skate environment. However, Floripa offers plenty of concrete to skate on in a tranquil vibe of palm trees and the sound of waves while you take a break to sip from a coconut.
Sandboarding
It gets crazier. There is a new sport in Florianópolis. In the dunes, you can attach your feet to a board and slide down the sand. It’s called sandboarding. The sport is similar to snowboarding, but you wax the board to make it slide on sand instead of snow.
Where to stay in Florianopolis?
I would recommend Campeche for surfing and more luxurious seaside tourism, Lagoa de Conceição for co-working cafes and kiteboarding, and Barra de Lagoa for a more local experience with amazing surf spots. I stayed at Selina Florianópolis and Rosemary hostel. Selina is more for luxury digital nomads, and Rosemary I would call a hub for creatives.
